The macroeconomic effects of (different) oil shocks: a VAR approach
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis paper investigates the contribution of oil supply, global activity and precautionary
oil-demand innovations for the major episodes of increasing oil prices and US
macroeconomic fluctuations. The empirical approach employed is based on the
recursively identified VAR model of the crude oil market proposed in Kilian (2008).
The estimated results attribute the 2002-2008 oil price increase to global activity and to
precautionary demand shocks (during the 2004-2006 period). Furthermore, based on the
responses of US industrial production and producer prices, the distinct innovations are
shown to produce different macroeconomic effects. Industrial production, in particular,
is shown to respond positively and significantly to global activity shocks in the shortrun, complementing and reinforcing Kilian’s explanation for the thriving behavior of
the US economy between 2002 and 2008. Finally, evidence supporting the relevance of
Blanchard and Galí’s structural change hypothesis is provided
Lensing reconstruction from Planck sky maps: inhomogeneous noise
We discuss the effects of inhomogeneous sky coverage on cosmic microwave background lens reconstruction, focusing on application to the recently launched Planck satellite. We discuss the 'mean field' which is induced by noise inhomogeneities, as well as three approaches to lens reconstruction in this context: an optimal maximum-likelihood approach which is computationally expensive to evaluate and two suboptimal approaches which are less intensive. The first of these is only suboptimal at the 5 per cent level for Planck, and the second prevents biasing due to uncertainties in the noise model
Ultrastructural and molecular characterization of Glugea serranus n. sp., a microsporidian infecting the blacktail comber, Serranus atricauda (Teleostei: Serranidae), in the Madeira Archipelago (Portugal)
A new microsporidian infecting the connective tis sue of the coelomic cavity of the blacktail comber Serranus
atricauda, in the Madeira Archipelago (Portugal), is described
on the basis of morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular
features. The microsporidian formed large whitish xenomas
adhering to the peritoneal visceral organs of the host. Each
xenoma consisted of a single hypertrophic cell, in the cyto plasm of which mature spores proliferated within
parasitophorous vacuoles surrounded by numerous collagen
fibers. Mature spores were ellipsoidal and uninucleated, mea suring an average of 6.5 ± 0.5 μm in length and 3.4 ± 0.6 μm
in width. The anchoring disk of the polar filament was subter minal, laterally shifted from the anterior pole of the spore. The
isofilar polar filament coiled in 18–19 turns, forming two rows
that surrounded the posterior vacuole. The latter occupied
about one third of the spore length. The polaroplast surround ing the apical and uncoiled portion of the polar filament
displayed two distinct regions: a lamellar region and an
electron-dense globule. Molecular analysis of the rRNA
genes, including the internal transcribed spacer region, and
phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood and neigh bor joining demonstrated that this microsporidian parasite
clustered with some Glugea species. Based on the differences
found both at the morphological and molecular levels, to other
members of the genus Glugea, the microsporidian infecting
the blacktail comber is considered a new species, thus named

Children’s and young people’s attitudes and feelings about artistic activities during oncological treatment
"1st World Congress of Children and Youth Health Behaviors / 4th National Congress on Health Education, Viseu, Portugal, 23-25 Maio 2013"Introduction: Artistic education occupies a relevant area in the context of oncology hospital pedagogical support activities as it can promote children’s and adolescents’ wellbeing to express their emotions while they are undergoing cancer treatment.
Objectives: To analyse the attitudes and wellbeing gained from the practice of artistic activities (AA) in the context of child and young people oncological treatment.
Methods: The instrument AAACTO (Artistic Activities Applied to Cancer Treatment in Children) was constructed and applied in the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO Porto, Portugal) and in the Support Group for Children with Cancer (GACC, Salvador da Bahia, Brazil). In each country, the sample included 75 subjects divided into three groups: Group A, 25 children, aged 2 to 19 years, in oncology treatment and carrying out AA; Group B, 28 parents; and Group C, 22 elements of the medical and non-medical staff. The present work focuses on the questions related to the responders’ perception about children’s attitudes and feelings about exercising AA during cancer treatment.
Results: In both institutions, the responders had a positive view about AA, though with slight differences. The three responder groups of both countries emphasized the influence of AA on improving children’s and young people’s sense of wellbeing during treatments. They further highlighted that AA stimulated their cognitive development, increased self-esteem and contentment.
Conclusions: Artistic activities were shown to be important not only for children’s and young people’s wellbeing but also for their cognitive development, indicating the high relevance of AA and the need to expand the skills in this area to enhance the quality of services provided in paediatric oncology.CIEC – Research Centre on Child Studies, IE, UMinho (FCT R&D 317
The Hospitalized children, particularly children in oncology treatment, present a
high degree of stress that disturbs their well-being. The exercise of artistic
activity can help to overcome this depression and contribute to improving their
quality of life.
In this study we examined the perceptions of health and education
professionals, of parents and the children themselves hospitalized about artistic
activities carried out under the pedagogic support (AP) activity and free time
(ATL), in the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) of Porto. AP art activities
take place throughout the school year and ATL in school holidays. The sample
comprised three groups: Group A, with 15 subject of the IPO team (4 nurses, 3
doctors, 3 teachers, 2 operating assistants, 2 volunteers and 1 teacher); gupo-
B, with 11 parents (10 mothers and 1 father), and group C with 6 children (aged
between 5 and 13 years) practicing activities of AP and ATL. A questionnaire
adapted from the "Pediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale (POQOLS 1994)
was applied to all groups. In general, the subjects’ opinions on the practice of
artistic activities in the hospital was clearly positive. The teaching team
emphasized its importance as a mediator in the learning of other disciplines.
Parents and non-medical team stressed their contribution in cognitive
development and abstraction from the hospital ambient. The Children
themselves referred they felt better well-being during the conduct of activities
and demonstrated a positive disposition in the sense of extroversion and feeling
of group belonging, personnel recovery and social integration. On the whole the
results show clearly that promoting artistic activities in hospitalized children can
create good opportunities for them to express their feelings and their
experiences, thereby contributing to the promotion of health and their quality
and life.
The following work tries to demonstrate the importance of how Art can have in a General History Course, under a academical teaching environment.
Education enables the intellectual development and, as our understanding that Art also provides the flow of creativity, we believe that when both are used in the same context, it can result in the teaching and aesthetic sensibility of a citizen as well as in the consolidation of values and respect for cultural diversity, which might lead to a more significant learning.
Under the thought period “As Transformações Sociais e Culturais do Terceiro Quartel do Século XX” [The Social and Cultural Transformations of the 3rd Quarter of the XX century] as well as the essential conceptualizations of Historical Knowledge were the perfect setting to help transmitting its contents, through iconographic documentation, without added effort from the part of the students which usually classify History Studies somewhat disinteresting.
We concluded that the information gathered is placed under two main immediate requirements: enriching and solidifying the knowledge of the students which contributes to yield a better positive result, can be the answer, among various other not-studied variables, to reach the goals placed by the school with motivated students
